photojournalism

it has itched and squirmed with life and now it is night and the life has all gone away. The silence is almost terrifying

— Sherwood Anderson

Photojournalism is a tool that should be used by every single journalist, not just photographers. Visual documentary is such a powerful and unique tool to tell stories, but it has to be done in a way that is nuanced and artful. The image must take the viewer on a journey through the subject matter, using elements and techniques that facilitate this. Good photojournalists and documentary artists compose photographs. To operate at a high level, it is not enough to simply take a photo; I’m in the business of making images. Through the ideas that my images put forth, I redefine photojournalism in the context of art.

I made the following images while exploring visual representations of censorship in America. I opted for a graphic, contrasty, black and white look to convey the concept. Ultimately, I published this work in the Focus Magazine, a subset production of the ReMarker.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I founded the Perspectives Podcast, which explored the pandemic’s impact on every facet of society through interviews—or rather, words. To supplement this project, I also founded a photojournalism portfolio that explores the more intimate realities and perspectives of the pandemic as they are evident in my Dallas communities.
